GTGP Retains Mason-Dixon Cup 10½ to 4½ with Sunday Rout

The Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia  overcame a 3-2 deficit entering Sunday's singles competition to retain the Mason-Dixon Cup for a second straight year.   Inspired by Allan Shannon's leadoff 8 & 7 victory, GTGP won eight of the ten Sunday singles matches at Ocean City's Links at Lighthouse Sound to claim victory over the Wormburners Golf Club of Washington, DC.

Shannon, who raised his career Mason-Dixon Cup record to 4-0, set the tone early Sunday and GTGP never looked back as it won the first five singles matches on a glorious October afternoon on Assawoman Bay.  The cup was clinched a short time later as Captain Don McDaniels won the seventh match 2 & 1 to earn GTGP's eighth point.  GTGP members Jim Phillips and Shawn Gross teamed with McDaniels and Shannon, respectively to win better-ball matches on Saturday, giving all four a 2-0 record during this year's competition.

The Mason-Dixon Cup began in 2005 as a friendly competition between the clubs based in Philadelphia and Washington, respectively.  The Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia won the inaugural event 10-5 at Chesapeake Bay GC, and will host the 2007 event at a location yet to be determined.
