GTGP Retains Mason-Dixon Cup with 8-7 Victory over Wormburners
After GTGP darted out to a 4-1 lead in Saturday's better-ball matches, Connie Boyle and Allan White won two of the first three singles matches on Sunday to give GTGP a 6-2 advantage and put the Cup within reach. But the Wormburners quickly responded with victories in the next three matches to pull within one point and put the outcome in question. Late GTGP victories by Bill Casey and Shawn Gross held off the Wormburners rally. Both Casey and Gross managed 2-0 records during this year's competition. For the first time in the three year history of the matches, all ten members of a team earned a point as every GTGP member won at least one match. In Saturday's better-ball matches, Ross Gershel teamed with Tom Amo to win a close match on the 18th hole, while the teams of Richard Dunn and Jim Phillips, Orest Marschalok and Bill Casey, and Allan Shannon and Shawn Gross won easily. In Saturday's last match, Shannon managed the first ever hole-in-one in the Mason-Dixon Cup when he aced the 185 yard 15th hole to put his team 2 up with three holes to play. The Mason-Dixon Cup began in 2005 as a friendly competition between the clubs based in Philadelphia and Washington, respectively. The Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia won the inaugural event 10-5 at Chesapeake Bay GC, and won again in 2006 by a 10 1/2 to 4 1/2 margin. The Wormburners will host the 2008 event at a location yet to be determined.
